Hello

My name is Tanya Acosta and I am the founder Sensory City. Since this is my first blog, I wanted to provide you with some information about the unique services that we provide.

I am a speech pathologist and the mother of a child with a disability.

We are a non-profit organization and our mission is to promote inclusion and awareness by making spaces sensory friendly.  We consult with hotels, sports stadiums, airports, museums, restaurants, theme parks, and architects to provide accommodations for guests who have unique sensory needs.  We offer staff training, sensory kits, safety kits/ checklists, communication boards, social stories and on-site consultations.

People who have autism, PTSD, dementia, and ADHD all benefit from sensory considerations.

Did you know that…

  • 13 million people in the US have PTSD
  • 1.5 million people in the US have Autism
  • 5.7 million adults in the US have dementia
  • 6.4 million children in the US have ADHD

That population exceeds 12 million!

Many of these individuals avoid going to establishments that don’t provide accommodations for them.  Did you know that there is now a Yelp-like app that lists all of the locations that are sensory-friendly?  We can offer establishments a sensory-friendly certification and list sensory friendly venues on these sites.

Autism Awareness Month-  APRIL 2019

In order to promote autism awareness, we are selecting 30 lucky Boston area Hotels and we are presenting them with a FREE Communication Board.  We will be giving one away every day in the month of April.  We have found that most often, hotels have no visual supports in place to communicate with those who are limited verbal, hearing impaired or even Non-English speakers.

We provide a picture choice board that allows people to point to what they are looking for.  On our general hotel communication board, some of the choices include:  shampoo, conditioner, towels, subway, water, shaving cream, iron, or slippers.

We are excited to be able to promote accessibility for those with less visible disabilities.
